Abstract: In this work, the adhesive properties of Ytterbium fibre laser treated carbon fibre reinforced plastic surfaces have been investigated. The laser treatment was able to remove epoxy residuals and increase the surface area, while the degree of the treatment could be adjusted by the pulse energy. The increase in surface area and formation of functional groups was accompanied by an improvement in wetting behaviour for laser treated specimens. Adhesive properties were also investigated by tensile tests with bonded specimens. The laser treatment was able to improve the adhesive behaviour of the bonded soft patch repairs.
