Modelling and Control of Voltage Source Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (VSC HVDC) SystemsHVDC based on thyristor technology (¿Classic¿ HVDC) has over the last 40 years become an established method of transmitting power over long distances, and for connecting electrical power systems that are unsynchronised or operate at different frequencies.

Recent developments in power electronics have made HVDC based on high power transistor technology feasible. This application known as VSC HVDC. VSC HVDC potentially offers many advantages over classic HVDC in demanding applications. There are a small number of installations currently running around the world , mostly on an experimental basis. This project is investigating high performance robust design of VSC HVDC controllers, focussing on using LMI techniques. The project is being supported by the power system manufacturers AREVA.
