Spending a Year Abroad during your Bachelor’s
The General Engineering Science (GES) study program teaches the basics of all four main areas of engineering: Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology, process engineering, and civil and environmental engineering. Lectures and courses are unabridged and taught by means of special lectures given by the respective faculties. This basic interdisciplinary expertise enables graduates to quickly familiarize themselves with new engineering specializations, understand the link between the different engineering disciplines as well as to keep pace with the fact that the job market is constantly changing.
In 2012/13, TUHH has set up an eight-semester Bachelor’s program called GES_Plus developed on the basis of the already existing six-semester GES program. This degree course is especially designed for top students that wish to spend time at a university abroad and do an internship during their Bachelor’s program without prolonging their studies. The four-year program with an integrated year abroad meets the interests of these students and constitutes a very efficient and sustainable study program. Students doing the program spend the first semester of their third year as a visiting student at a partner university abroad where they focus on their specialization. During the second semester of their year abroad they are supposed to do an industrial internship in a company in the same country. Before they leave for their chosen destination, students complete language courses as well as courses focusing on intercultural aspects as well as on the culture of their target country. They will further be given intensive support and advice on their university choice, the courses they are to study at the host university and the arrangement of their internship. At this stage of the program, TUHH and the Northern Institute of Technology Management (NIT) will rely on their industrial contacts, in particular on their numerous partner universities in Europe and overseas where English is the language of instruction.
TUHH recognizes studies and exam results (ECTS credit points) acquired abroad, so the year abroad will not delay the further course of their studies in any way. In some cases it might be possible to find an internship position with a well-known NIT partner company (see page 9).
So far, the following international universities are part of the programme:
- Université Technologie de Compiègne (France);
- Universidad Politècnica de Madrid (Spain);
- Linköping University (Sweden);
- Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China).
More universities are planned:
- South-West Jiao Tong University Chengdu (China);
- Texas Tech University (USA).
During their stay abroad, students (of German or EU nationality or foreign students who have been educated in Germany) may qualify for a monthly grant by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) which also covers travel costs and (part of the students’) health insurance. Also, students are usually paid for their internship by the companies.
The range of courses taught in English and a year spent abroad make GES_Plus another interesting internationally-oriented study program offered at TUHH. Choosing a specialization enables the graduates of this program to do a Master’s programs in their area of specialization at TUHH. After completing the GES_Plus Bachelor’s program, graduates thus have access to a whole range of German and international Master’s programs at TUHH and the NIT. Of course, GES_Plus graduates will also be qualified for a Master’s program at a top university abroad.
Also, they might opt to gain practical work experience working for a company (such as the company with which they did their internship) before moving on to do a Master’s program later on. Graduates of the four-year GES-Plus program are sought-after specialists and there is no doubt that they are well prepared for further international university studies or for a career in an international environment.
- Outstanding grades during the first year of GES (top 25%)
- High level of proficiency in English
- High motivation and personal qualification for spending a year abroad
